The Beginner’s Guide to Fitness in Phoenix

By The Underground studio team

If we had a dollar for every time someone walked up to the desk and said,

“I’m not really sure which class I should take…”

we could probably buy everyone a smoothie.

So let’s start here:

You don’t need to know. You just need to start!

One of the best things about group fitness — especially here at The Underground phoenix — is that there isn’t one “right” way to move your body. There’s just your way. And that can change day to day.

We’re here to help you figure it out without overthinking it. We see first-timers every single week — and they all start in different places. Some come for strength, some for stress relief, some because a friend dragged them in. All of those reasons are valid.

Showing up is the real win.

A Quick Breakdown of Our Class Styles (So You Can Choose Confidently)

Here’s a simple, no-pressure way to think about the formats we offer. This isn’t about labels — it’s about what sounds good to you.

🔸 mat Pilates (power, Heated & classic)

Pilates is all about controlled strength, stability, and core work.

    •    Builds strength without high impact

    •    Heated classes add intensity and mobility, but you’re always encouraged to pace yourself

    •    power pilates is a high-energy, contemporary take on mat Pilates featuring more standing work, active transitions, and full-body sequences than a traditional mat class.

  • classic classes are set to a moderate room temperature but still deliver the same structure as a traditional mat class.

You do not need to be flexible. You do not need prior Pilates experience. We promise.

🔸 Indoor Cycling (Silent Disco)

This is a cardio party with a ton of personality.

    •    Everyone controls their own resistance

    •    High energy, great playlists, zero pressure (headphones = freedom)

Some people ride to go all-out. Others ride at a steady pace. Both belong in the room.

🔸 Yoga (vinyasa flow)

Think balance, mobility, and breath — not pretzel poses.

    •    Helps you move better in everything else you do

    •    Modifications are always encouraged

Yoga here is about connection, not perfection.

🔸 FLEX Total Body Strength conditioning

If you want to feel strong fast, this one’s for you.

    •    Functional, athletic movements, timed to the rhythm of the music.

    •    Scalable for beginners and experienced clients

You’ll be coached through every movement — you’re never left guessing.

Let’s take the mystery out of your first class:

    •    Wear what you’re comfortable moving in

    •    Bring a towel & water (along with a mat if you’re taking pilates or yoga)

    •    Arrive a few minutes early — we’ll help you get set up

Let your instructor know you’re new (we love that)

You Don’t Have to Pick One Thing Forever

This is something we tell people all the time at the desk:

You should really try everything and Most of our regulars like to mix it up:

    •    Pilates + cycling

    •    Strength + yoga

    •    Heated classes one day, non-heated the next

Your routine will evolve. Your energy will change. That’s normal — and honestly, that’s the fun part.

A Quick Reminder From Us:

No one is watching you or expecting you to “keep up.”

No one cares if you modify.

We care that you feel supported, encouraged, and proud you showed up.

If you ever feel unsure about what to take next, ask us! That’s what we’re here for.

We’ll help you find what works — and we’ll cheer you on while you do.
